         Purpose

The purpose of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) is to teach youth about human rights, specifically the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and inspire them to become advocates for tolerance and peace.

This year, in honor of the United Nations International Year of Youth, YHRI urges leaders in countries around the world to recognize that children who do not know their rights are vulnerable, and to promote the UDHR and "cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories," in accordance with the General Assembly when this document was adopted and proclaimed on December 10th, 1948.

Human Rights Education Successes

Students, educators and others who work to improve the lives of youth continue to provide positive feedback on their use of Youth for Human Rights educational programs and materials. A few recent examples follow:

"I showed the video and gave each of the children a copy of the booklet. It fit in nicely with "bully" talk. At this age (upper elementary school), we are seeing more bullying. I found that they were particularly interested in the scenes that involved children. We often refer back to those short scenes." Teacher, USA

"The material was successfully received and is being very helpful in working with young victims of sexual exploitation, child labor, and abuse within the family." Social Worker, Brazil

"I found the DVD very useful so I have integrated some of the ideas in the DVD into some of my lectures on accounting and finance. Students who are not usually exposed to human rights within the course of their study of the financial markets found the link between markets and their effect on human rights most challenging to conventional wisdom about the role of markets in society." Teacher, Australia
